Built for family cruising, this classic 49′ Custom Classic Trawler HELVETIA offers ample space and comfort for days spent on the water.

Starting with a spacious aft deck where you can sit and relax underway, she has port and starboard access to the foredeck. This area is large enough for seating and/or sun bathing.

Access to the Salon from the aft deck is through the starboard doorway. Immediately to port is the doorway with steps down to the Captain’s Stateroom. Further port is built-in cabinetry housing the bar area. The classic oak wood interior with cream carpeting is the perfect backdrop for your personal decor and accessories. To port are two lounge style chairs separated by a built-in side table. Directly across to starboard is the cream fabric covered sofa with built-in side tables on each side. Curtained wrap around windows bring plenty light into this room. Forward to port is a built-in navigational desk and a doorway leading onto the deck. This room is furnished with a flat screen Samsung TV.

Proceeding forward and down two steps brings you to the galley area. To port is the U-shaped bench seating wrapped around the dining table. To starboard is the fully equipped galley with stove top, oven, microwave, refrigerator and sink and dishwasher. The cabinets are all done in white Formica piped with oak wood. This area offers many storage spaces. Windows are on either side, again brings in natural light.

Continuing forward to starboard is a head with two doorway entrances; from the galley area and from the stateroom. This head has ample space and includes toilet, sink, tub with shower. To port are upper and lower bunk beds with built-in storage.

All the way forward is another stateroom with upper and lower bunk beds to starboard. Built-in cabinet storage to port. Natural lighting comes in from the windows on each side and overhead. Cabinetry throughout are white. The midship Master Stateroom is accessed via the Salon. This room is equipped with a double bed, built-in sink and shelf storage cabinet.

From the aft deck, to port are stairs leading up to the wheelhouse. This area is enclosed and is equipped with a L-shaped bench seating and two arm chairs.

Main entrance to the salon is from the teak cockpit. Immediately to the starboard is a convertible queen sleeper couch and to port are two chairs with a table between them. Woodwork is traditional satin finish teak wood. Forward in the salon to port next to the side door to the deck is a captains desk. To starboard is the entertainment center with a Samsung flat screen television and satellite TV receiver. Aft in the salon is a dry bar area with storage and racks for glasses. All of the wood finishes are in excellent condition and the headliners have all been updated.

Forward and a few steps down are the galley and dinette. The galley has updated appliances with a holding plate refrigerator, a four burner gas stove, a GE Spacemaker microwave, Kitchenaid dishwasher. Cabinets are white melamine with high gloss wood accents and counter top is butcher block style laminate with a stainless sink. It is not likely that any of this is original. It looks like it has all been updated over the years. There is a “U” shaped dinette raised on a platform with storage below and more storage below the bench. High gloss finish on knotty pine bulkheads sets this are off from the teak interior of the salon and the flooring in the dinette has been updated to synthetic teak and holly for easy care and maintenance.

Forward to starboard is a door to the head. This was designed so that the head could be used as a day head from the galley area but when staying on board there is another door from the cabin. Similar to the galley the walls are white melamine with gloss varnish wood accents and a Corian style counter top. A surprising large shower tub combination is unusual in a boat of this vintage.

Main & Forward Cabins

Forward of the galley is the main cabin with upper and lower berths. A cedar lined hanging locker closet to one side gives plenty of room for storage and the other storage cabinets are made of teak with doors of bird’s eye maple. As in the galley, walls are white with varnished wood trim often known as Herroschoff style.

The biggest drawback to the cabin design is that access to the forward cabin is through the main cabin although there are privacy doors to both cabins. The forward cabin also has upper and lower berths. There is a second head located off this cabin.

Instead of only a ladder there are actually stairs to the semi enclosed flybridge with hardtop. The isinglass is showing its age and the new owner can purchase what style is to be used. For ease of access from the stairs into the bridge area there is a door rather than unzip the isinglass. The interior is varnished teak with recent upholstery and white vinyl panels for the headliner. This boat was used for many years on the New River in Fort Lauderdale with four bridges to get to the ocean so a wide aluminum ladder was installed form the cockpit to the flybridge hardtop to reach the mast light to be lowered when going under the bridges.

Decks & Superstructure

All of the teak decks have been replaced at one time, the entire boat has had Bradford Marine paint jobs and the boat has been stored under cover since 1966. The cockpit is good sized with large hatches for access to tanks and steering. There is a door through the transom to the ample swim platform. The boat was used for Scuba diving extensively so the platform and ladder are larger than typical.

There are walk around side decks to the bow. Over the forward cabin is an electric davit with 9 foot hard bottom Avon inflatable with 1995 9.9 HP Honda outboard motor. On the bow is a ten foot fishing pulpit with anchor mounted here plus a backup stainless anchor mounted on deck. A power windlass makes retrieving the anchor much easier.

Engines, Electrical, & Machinery

The boat is powered with Detroit Diesel naturally aspirated 6-71 engines. These are straight inline engines with each cylinder being 71 cubic inches. The 71 series was first developed in 1938 and built into the early 1990’s. Parts and service are available all over the world. Since they have no turbo chargers, they are lower RPM long life engines.

With a slim beam of 13′ 6″ the boat had Vosper Thorneycroft active fin stabilizers installed at Bradford Marine when the engine were installed in 1976 to make a more comfortable ride.

All of the air conditioning has been upgraded over the years and there are diverters for the cool air from the salon to the flybridge.

There are two Northern Lights generators on board for backup electric power at all times. One is located forward and the other is located aft.
